Rebel Militia
The Confederate Infantry were known as “Johnny Rebs” or “Rebels.” They were a distinctive fighting force with often, much more success than their Yankee counterparts. This was due to a number of factors; the confederates had a head start on several stand-out generals. This made a big difference when the Union were fielding incompetent generals, allowing Confederate generals such as Jackson and Stuart to have a free hand and little opposition. Another factor is the terrain which many southerners had grown up on, being the main playing field of the war, with many friends who were perhaps hostile to the federals. A final winning factor are rumors and morale. After the Yankees have lost one battle, it becomes easier to lose the next and your troops might begin to be depressed in the idea that the Rebels are somehow superior and there’s no use trying etc. The same works on the rebels late in the war, but inversely, they have been winning and come to expect victory. Led by Robert E Lee, their morale is almost always high. Their rebel yell adds a frightening tone to the mix of noises on the battlefield, becoming a trademark of the Confederacy and a cheer, and patriotic in every way. They went way to the same war as their northern brothers, they had the same idea that this war would last 90 days or less, though as it lasted longer, far longer, their confidence and superiority grew. But it was not meant to grow forever. It climaxed and was smothered in a 1450 day war that proved only that the American Freedoms and dream will not die, and proving the resiliency of it’s people.
