United States Major General
Major Generals would typically be the commanders of divisions, but would also make up the commanders of corps, as well as armies. A major general would also lead military departments. Confederate divisions were usually larger than federal divisions, containing four or five brigades where the Union divisions would command two or three brigades. A corps would contain three or four divisions and armies could be anywhere from two corps to behemoths of several corps. As to be expected, the responsibilities of major generals greatly varied depending on seniority and assignment. In the Northern armies, there was very little hope for promotion above major general, with only the lieutenant general higher than it. This rank was exceptionally difficult to attain with George Washington and Winfield Scott the sole holders of this rank previous to Ulysses S Grant’s appointment in 1864. However, Scott was only promoted to brevet lieutenant general and Grant the full regular army lieutenant general, thus being the highest ranking general since Washington. He was the only officer appointed such during the war. In the Confederate army, one could be routinely advanced to lieutenant generals, who would command corps and armies, as well as full general who would usually lead armies. Jefferson Davis acted as a war dictator and would seldom delegate further responsibilities to his subordinates but due to political pressures and desperation, he finally made Robert E Lee commander of all Confederate armies in January 1865.
