Confederate States Colonel

A colonel in the Confederate Army operated much like the colonel of the Union Army. Typically, the colonel would command a regiment or battalion with varying companies. Usually the regiment would have nine or ten regiments and the battalion would have less. Colonels could command cavalry regiments or infantry regiments and in the artillery they may command a battery or group of batteries. To command an infantry regiment, they take orders for the regiment from the brigade commander as to placement and special orders such as covering rear or flanks. They would overlook the building of entrenchments and related duties. In battle, they would lead the regiment directly and make sure that their regiment performed to its highest capability. Many colonels were killed in action. They would also be responsible for the proper training of their troops, drilling again and again, working basic maneuvers and procedures into the fibers of the soldier so that they would be able to load, change formations and stand while under fire and in stressful situations on the field. Cavalry colonels had similar duties, and artillery colonels were responsible for the supply and conservation of ammunition as well as others to add to the duties that the colonel would have. Colonels were also sometimes given command of a brigade, though this was seldom done in the Confederacy, usually choosing a brigadier general when available. Colonels could also take parts in the departments in Richmond running the war behind the scenes.
