Confederate States Major
Similar to the command structure of the Union army, a major was the third in command of a regiment. There were also captains who commanded companies and lieutenants who served under them to help keep order with the troops and sometimes acting as messengers (though more commonly this occurred above the regimental level). A major as third in command would help administratively when needed and would supervise various drills. In battle, they could be responsible for a detachment and helped serve as a barrier to frightened troops. The major would lead the regimental attack at the orders of the colonel, placing himself at the front with the color guard. If both the colonel and lieutenant colonel were killed or were out of commission, the major would take command of the regiment. Majors also served as staff officers for ranking generals and took part in administrative duties over the army. Sometimes they would operate as chief of staff and be responsible to know essentially where the rest of the staff and runners were and what they were doing. They also took quartermaster duties if so assigned and various other tasks. In this gameplay, these units are somewhat flexible as there are not captains, or lieutenants, or lieutenant colonels, or adjutants, or various other positions and this unit will likely stand in as the sole “junior officer,” of those tasks.
