frigate
In 1860, the Southern forces did not command a single ship, and the United States navy was in dismal shape. Both sides owned few ships, and most existing ships for the United States were elsewhere. But Lincoln called upon the navy to build a massive blockade of the Confederacy, and this, as well as the control of the Mississippi river would be important pieces for the North to win the war. This blockade was somewhat ridiculed, as at the time of that order’s issue, there were only three or four available ships. Many of the ships available were older sail powered frigates. They had been the kings of the waters in previous decades, though the United States had never really had the most impressive fleet to boast about. These would suffer greatly as steam ships and iron clads took the waters. The North did make much progress on improving its blockade. Initially, most blockade runners of the south made it through with loads of cotton and other cargos, returning with guns, ships, supplies, and luxuries. But by hasty repairs, ship builds, and civilian ship additions, the North could sport 212 seaworthy vessels by January 1862. Eventually the blockade did begin to take its toll and the South began to have trouble supporting itself.
